Colours to wear now #1: Black & Cobalt

Posted on October 01, 2013 by Rachel Kwei | 0 comments

According to a recent email from Net-a-Porter, there are four colour combinations to work into your wardrobe now - black & cobalt, burgundy & blush, navy & yellow, grey & orange. So taking inspiration from Net-a-Porter's recommendations here's the first of four posts with suggestions of cobalt bags from independent designers.

I've come across a few interesting clutches lately and while I'm not often in the market for a clutch they are always handy to have so this week I thought I'd share these.

The first is from London-based brand Lost Property of London who take salvaged fabrics and materials and turns them into accessories for a second life. Not only great for the eco-conscious but they look good too. I really like their Beeby clutch which is made from salvaged coffee sack and leather.

Materials + Process produces handmade goods and leather accessories designed and crafted in San Francisco. I've had my eye on the Georgia clutch for some time now and love the practical, in-built pockets helping you carry some cash, cards and your mobile in an organised way.

Nancybird is a Melbourne-based designer known for her vintage-style designs and combination of leather and textile prints. The Ziggy clutch, shown here in charcoal, has a detachable wrist strap with three interior pockets, one of which is zipped.

This bag made by Misoui is technically a small bag as the name 'Small Purse' suggests, but, it has a detachable strap so I think it would make a great clutch. I'm a bit taken with the pockets - one exterior pocket which is super handy for quick access, to things like your Oyster card, and another interior pocket. Saves the inevitable rummaging around you will do, even with a bag of this size! All Misoui products are made by hand.

Last but certainly not least are the extensive range of clutches from Clare Vivier (click here for an earlierDiscover: Clare Vivier post). There are so many colour combinations and types of leather to choose from. My personal favourite is the Foldover clutch in blush snake.

Feature: weekenders

Who doesn't love the idea of a weekend away or a mini-break where you can throw a few things into a bag and jet off somewhere fabulous? It's the romantic notion of being able to drop everything and go, life's necessities carried over your shoulder. As people are getting desperate at this time of year and heading off in search of sun, here are a few bags that will pass for carry on luggage, just don't forget about your liquid allowance if you are travelling by plane.
The Jimmy, Ally Cappellino
If you've got a bit of cash to splash, this would be one weekender worth splashing it on. It's got two interior canvas pockets and one handy external pocket. It only comes in one colour but the tan is so gorgeous it would be hard to go past it.

Weekender, Clare Vivier
This navy blue leather weekender from Claire Vivier is another stand out item for me. In addition to the two handles, it also has a longer, detachable shoulder strap and zippered interior pocket. Personally, I like the navy as it's classic and the celery for something a bit different but it comes in four other colours - black, camel brown, green and sanguine.

Leather travel bag, Trakatan
Made in Italy, this weekender only comes in black but is a great size if you need to fit a bit more in than a couple of days worth of stuff. It's got two handles and a long over the shoulder or cross body strap.

Soho travel bag, Elf
From the Local collection, the Soho is the perfect carry-on bag (44cm x 30cm). It has two exterior zipped pockets on each side with two flap pockets on each end. Inside there's two compartments and a zipped pocket. Hand made to order in Bali, all Elf bags are produced by hand and delicately lined in your choice of traditionally hand dyed Batik cotton or in plain suede if you prefer.

Florence Weekender Duffel, Knomo
And for a non-leather option, this is a scotch-guarded durable nylon bag. It comes in terracotta with the option of two short handles or a long shoulder strap, and 'leather-like' trim. It comes with the "If lost" Knomo ID number to help your bag find you. I think it's priced at a very reasonably £145 for an weekend bag with a bit of personality.

Discover: Clare Vivier

I was really excited when I came across the Clare Vivier brand. I was immediately struck by the classic-but-with- a-twist designs making them practical enough to use day in day out without being bor

ed. Beautiful Italian leather in gorgeous colours with bright, contrasting zips add a splash of colour. Clare Vivier bags are very reasonably priced for a product that you will be able to use year in year out.

Based in California, Clare Vivier products are all handmade locally and often made to order. The good news is that Clare Vivier ships internationally and if the product is available at the time of order it will ship within 2 days but if it is to be made to order it will ship within 10 days. Monogramming is also available on some products which make lovely, personalised gifts (or just special treats for yourself ;-)) Here are some of my favourites…
